How the rook moves in chess
The rook moves any distance horizontally or vertically.
The rook movement rule
A rook travels along ranks and files until another piece blocks the path.
A move is legal only when it leaves your own king safe. The rook captures an opposing piece by finishing on its square.
How to use the rook
Rooks thrive on open files and connected back ranks. They also join the king in castling.
