How the pawn moves in chess
The pawn moves forward one square and captures diagonally.
The pawn movement rule
A pawn may move two squares from its starting rank if both squares are empty. It captures one square diagonally forward.
A move is legal only when it leaves your own king safe. The pawn captures an opposing piece by finishing on its square.
How to use the pawn
Pawns cannot move backward. Reaching the last rank causes immediate promotion to a queen, rook, bishop or knight.
