Chess pieces

How the knight moves in chess

The knight moves in an L shape: two squares, then one sideways.

The knight movement rule

The knight is the only chess piece that can jump over other pieces.

A move is legal only when it leaves your own king safe. The knight captures an opposing piece by finishing on its square.

How to use the knight

Knights are strongest near the center, where they attack up to eight squares. On the rim they have fewer choices.
